There was a time in my twenties when I believed I lived a nearly perfect life. I hadn’t yet finished my education, fulfilled my professional ambition, didn’t own a home (or much else), lived on a budget where even quarters and nickels were taken into account, but I had since the age of sixteen, a nearly perfect love with one of the most exceptional souls I have ever known. I was married to my beloved Glenn. Our life together lasted twenty-five years, until Glenn was diagnosed with a terminal illness.
This is the story of that catastrophe and the many challenges that followed, year after year, decade after decade. I have survived many life-altering experiences with death and disease including breast cancer, a near fatal sepsis infection, brain injury due to stroke resulting in significant loss of vision, paralysis, and subsequent loss of career and independence. My husband Michael has struggled with the loss of his first wife to murder, and the loss of his twenty-five year manufacturing career to downsizing. We have struggled with debt, extensive medical care and costs, and prolonged loss of income.
I do not share my story for sympathy – there are countless other far more tragic lives. However, I see so much loss, fear, and uncertainty about the future all around me, and I want to share what I have learned. I believe that my struggles have given me some insight into overcoming challenge and embracing a new reality. If my story and personal reflections on crisis and grief touch even one person locked in a struggle with any type of loss and bring a single ray of light into their darkness, the intent of all my challenges will be realized. I hope to convey a message of honesty about how paralyzing adversity can be. I certainly have stumbled into many dark places and still do, but faith, compassion, love, and personal resiliency, have led to a determination to live a life in light and love.
I so often hear people rail against a God who allows so much suffering and loss, but I now understand that it is often only through challenge that we are afforded an opportunity for personal evolution. Certainly joy and ease are to be relished when they enter our lives, but to live in a state of perpetual happiness is not our purpose. Perhaps the unchallenged life is the greatest challenge of all. It is certainly the rarest. This is my story.

Life in the Light Reflections on Loss Grief and Overcoming Challenge edition by Lynn Oldham SelfHelp eBooks

It has been said "to truly understand a man's soul, one must walk a mile in his shoes first". Losing my husband to an unknown insidious cancer in the mere span of 3 months left me in what felt to be uncharted territory. Since I was considered to be a "young Widow" at the age of 42, I found it extremely difficult to relate to any of the little help that does exist in our society in dealing with the painful subject of paralyzing grief.

I tried counseling, depression medication and multiple bereavement groups in conjunction with purchasing as much literature on the subject that I could find. Although I am sure they all helped in one way or another, I could never shake the feeling that I was being spoken to from an "Ivory Tower" and that surely, "They" did not fully identify with my particular grief.

That feeling ended the day I read Ms. Oldham's book. To say that her book transformed my life is a huge understatement since I know that in fact, it saved my life. In `Life in the Light', Ms. Oldham not only talks the talk, she walks with you wearing the same pair of shoes you have had suddenly placed on the soles of your feet, all the while leading you back onto the lit path. I am forever indebted to this book and Pray that this strand of hope will find its way into your life.

Life in the Light Reflections on Loss Grief and Overcoming Challenge edition by Lynn Oldham SelfHelp eBooks Reviews

Lynn Oldham's moving, inspirational, Life in the Light, a true story of enduring terrible losses, offers readers a beam of hope. Her style of beautifully written prose interspersed with timely quotes only enhances her message that with the support of friends, family and one's community, that beam of light can re-enter our lives.
This book moved me in a way that few books do. Often, I find this type of book preachy, but Lynn Oldham's book speaks from her heart and her true experiences. She could present herself as "look at all the bad things that have happened to me", but her book lifted me up, gave me appreciation of life and gratefullness that she has written this book which shows the way to gratitude. I was a young widow myself and her words and feelings were spot on. I loved this book and keep it nearby for a quick "check in".
The author has written a personal account of her life which it is an inspiration to read! Well worth the read!
