The Aeneid English edition by Virgil John Dryden Reference eBooks

In writing his Iliad and Odyssey, Homer somehow left out the story of the actual conquest of Troy, in which the wooden horse figures so importantly. The Aeneid, by Virgil, takes up that part of the story:"Arms and the man, I sing" is the commanding opening line, and it's quite a song. The destruction of Tory is splendidly bloody [it makes Game of Thrones resemble a tea party], and from there the book goes on to follow our hero, Aeneas, on the fraught wanderings that are to bring him eventually, to the founding of Rome.

All of the books here mentioned are challenging to read, as they're written in rhymed couplets, which forces some inversion of language, occasional linguistic trickery and shortcuts. But readers with a little patience will fall into the swing of it soon enough, so accept the challenge. You are, after all, in the presence of great literature.

The Aeneid English edition by Virgil John Dryden Reference eBooks Reviews

The sequel to the Illiad. It is truly a classic from classical times. I have enjoyed reading it now that I no longer must.
Classic literature at its best. Beautiful prose and flow. Excellent imagery. One really appreciates the dedication and thought it took to make this story come alive.
Good translation. Have no problem following the story line. Wish it was illustrated and maybe a few notes. For the price an excellent buy.
The classic we all remember from college. This is the classic sequel to The Odyssey which became foundational as the tale of the origin of the Roman Empire. Equally significant is that it is also artistically foundational to western literature. As Homer was to Greece and the Greek language, Virgil was to Rome and Latin.
Great, can't believeit's free
This is a beautiful translation that I thoroughly enjoyed reading at times aloud. If there were anything to make it better, a footnote or three of references would have added to my enjoyment. I found myself looking up some of the characters to find where they fit in Trojan history.
My undergraduate professor recommended this translation to me more than fifty years ago. It's timeless and beautiful. Not as exact as the old Loeb edition; but it is poetry and it eminently conveys the grandeur of Virgil's original. Reading it again is like meeting a very, very old friend who is steeped in wisdom and maturity.
