This is a super user-friendly overview of a very complex topic, yoga philosophy. I especially like Hari's well thought-out explanation about how commentary in different yoga texts may vary based on the lens of the commentator. I found this to be very useful in my own yoga philosophy studies and reading of different versions or intepretations of yoga texts, i.e., Patanjali Yoga Sutras and Bhagavad Gita, etc. I like the format of the book, which is a dialogue between student and teacher. I highly recommend this book for those beginning on the path, or even for those who are further along on the path, in studies of yoga philosophy. I think this would be a great book to add to yoga teacher training programs required reading lists.Product details

In Search of the Highest Truth Adventures in Yoga Philosophy Harikirtana das 9780998077307 Books Reviews
A wonderful book - I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a great introduction to the core philosophical ideas of yoga. I loved the down-to-earth presentation of sophisticated concepts and the author's pointed sense of humor. Leaving the exchanges with his students in dialog form was a great choice since the students often give voice to the readers' own questions and challenges, in turn giving Hari-kirtana's philosophical points an immediate and direct effect. Bravo!
This book brought me to the path of Bhakti yoga. It was truly a destined read for me. If you want a clear, concise, and yet funny and memorable read on yoga philosophy, and specifically the path of Bhakti, this is your book. Hari is a brilliant teacher and writer. This slim little volume is easily one of the best books on yoga philosophy out there. Enjoy!
I'm using my husband's account to write this review since I generally use his Prime account to purchase items and therefore don't have enough purchase points on my own account for to allow me to write a review there. Anyway, a friend of mine gave me this book and I have been reading it slowly over the last few months. The writing is so clear and informative. He explains ancient and profound Yoga philosophies to make them easily accessible and understandable to the modern busy mind. He includes bonuses such as the Sanskrit pronunciation guide and detailing the origin of certain modern words like "video" (sanskrit root meaning "light".) I highly recommend this book if you are into yoga, the Bhagavad Gita or spirituality in general. He has a beautiful way of connecting very old truths with today's living and lifting us out of our sometimes myopic way of seeing the world. --Teri Harbour
Wherever you are in your path of yoga, you’ve truly found a gem with this read. Consider yourself blessed for picking up this book - Hari-kirtana das distills ancient yogic wisdom into modern-day practically for any soul seeking to understand the deeper underpinnings of what yoga means at its roots. Anyone challenged by reading sacred text within the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali or Bhagavad Gita will find an ease and grace with this read. The creatively framed expressions of dialogue between teacher and students allows for a down-to-earth and fun way to ponder the deeper questions of yoga philosophy and applications to life. I found this to be a fascinating read, which I absorbed in one airplane ride! As a practitioner and teacher of yoga in today’s western world, I’m grateful for the accessibility of this material and highly recommend his work for all on the path of yoga.
Obviously Hari-kirtana knows something about yoga and it's philosophical basis. Better yet he writes down-to-earth about heady topics. This is a concise overview of what yoga culture is really about with focus on Bhakti. I enjoyed reading this.
I love yoga philosophy but find a lot books on the topic to be cumbersome or boring. This is not the case at all with In Search of the Highest Truth. It is an extremely enjoyable and engaging read, as well as a rich source of knowledge. If you have ever felt like trying to grasp the concepts and historical context of yoga philosophy is a daunting task then this is definitely the book for you. The author invites us to come sit and learn as if we are actually present in his class. We get to feel like we are part of a community of learners, and never feel like we are not smart or spiritual enough for the deeper meanings of yoga. Hari-kirtana is lighthearted and warm, but clearly knows his stuff. He is clearly an authentic believer and practitioner of what he teaches. For anyone seeking to deepen their yoga practice, yoga teachers who want an excellent reference for philosophy, or anyone interested in a spiritual journey, this is a must read!
I have purchases several copies to share with yoga students. It is difficult to synthesize the spiritual essence of yoga for our times. Hari-Kirtana Das speaks with clarity, and the format of the book is a dialogue between students and teacher, so it is accessible even as a first read on essential features of the spiritual teachings of yoga. I highly recommend this book for any level of practitioner. Enjoy the journey!
